Talk by Jennifer Robinson: "Shells from Roman Pompeii"

The Roman town of Pompeii was situated on the shore of the Mediterranean and a wide range of marine molluscs was eaten by the inhabitants. However, marine shells also served a less material role, promoting and publicizing the prosperity of citizens. The shell is symbolic of the goddess Venus and so showy fountains, bedecked with shells and brightly coloured glass, served both to encourage the gods to favour the household and to demonstrate the wealth and taste of the owner. Exotic shells, some with possible connotations of fertility, were used as decorative objects or even kept in the household safe.
