Identifying common British snails: umbilicus is only a chink

Shell about as high as wide and with only a small chink of an umbilicus

Some juvenile snails of species which normally have the umbilicus completely sealed when adult, often show just a chink of an umbilicus, so you need to check that your shell is an adult.
To do this, count the number of whorls. If it is less than 5, then look for another similar, but larger, shell. If there are 5 or 6 whorls, then click on the image below.
