This event has been postponed due to concerns about the Covid-19 situation. We hope to reschedule for Autumn 2020 and will post information on the website as it becomes available.
Guest speaker: Robert Cameron: ‘At a snail’s pace: how a New Naturalist got written.’
Abstract: Most of my snail-related writing, over more than 50 years, has of necessity been mainly for a rather specialised readership. The New Naturalist series, however, sets out to bring expertise to a wider but hopefully well-informed public. It is a challenge that requires a different approach. My book, Slugs and Snails, was published as a New Naturalist in December 2016. Its origins, however, go back much further, and a book published 15 or even 5 years earlier would have been very different. There were twists and turns, rewriting and composing, while running to keep up with a lot of new discoveries. On the way, I made many new discoveries myself, not only about the subject matter, but about the kindness of both friends and strangers. These will feature strongly in a talk that will try to impose some order on what seemed at the time to be simply creative chaos.
14:00 – 17:30: Angela Marmont Centre, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Rd., London SW7 5BD.
(Council members please note that there will be a Council meeting before this meeting.)
