Saturday 19th October 2019: INDOOR MEETING: Demonstrations, exhibits, and lecture.
Guest Speaker: Simon Terry: ‘The Burgundy of Britain - Exploring the autecology of Britain's Largest Land Snail’.
14:00 – 17:00: Angela Marmont Centre, Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD.
The noble ‘Roman Snail’ or ‘Escargot de Bourgogne’, Helix pomatia, appears restricted to southern regions of the British Isles . Simon Terry has been studying the autecology of the species for thirteen years, following eight populations in the Box Hill area of Surrey since 2002. His research reveals how an irreducibly complex interaction with the environment is foundational to its density, optimum health and longevity in the field. The presentation shows how these unique relationships help not only explain its scattered distribution in the UK but also provide a helpful guide to its future conservation, specifically in the management of suitable habitats.
(Council members please note that there will be a Council meeting before this meeting.)
