Saturday 31st August 2019: FIELD MEETING (marine): Titchfield Haven, Hampshire.

Date
Type
Field meeting

Shallow muddy-sandy bivalve shore on the Solent with some dwarf Zostera patches; of particular interest for the recently arrived bag mussel Arcuatula senhousia (native to the Asia-Pacific region), also Mercenaria, and possibly Acanthocardia paucicostata.  Low spring tide at 18:04.

Meet at 16:00 on shore at SU 530 023, below Cliff Road; parking can be busy, so allow time for walk in.

Wellington boots advised.  The intertidal muddy-sand is largely firm underfoot and is only a bit loose near the top of the shore where finer material can deposit but even here it's never more than ankle deep at the very most. It stays fairly wet and is interspersed with shallow puddles and patches of dwarf Zostera.

The site is an SSSI, SPA and a Ramsar site.
