11:00 – 17:00: Angela Marmont Centre, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Rd., London SW7 5BD.
Mother of pearl is surprisingly tough though it’s made of chalk. Byssus threads can withstand high forces, yet they don’t get ripped out of the soft mussel flesh. The threads are glued onto wet and slimy rocks. Chitons can see their enemies coming. Limpets don’t have to be streamlined. Some of these observations, and others, can be used for novel technologies.
Demonstrations, exhibits and discussion in the morning will be followed by the lecture, which will start shortly after 14:00.
We are most grateful to Professor Vincent for stepping in at short notice after the original speaker had to cancel.
Would any member wishing to speak and/or exhibit material please contact the organiser.
(Council members please note that there will be no Council meeting before this meeting.)
