Records of the squid Sthenoteuthis pteropus from British waters are reviewed in the light of current knowledge of its taxonomy and distribution. All extant material is re-identified as Ommastrephes bartramii on the basis of the tentacular fixing apparatus. This is consistent with the known distribution of the two species. It is concluded that all British records of S. pteropus are based on misidentifications.
