This paper gives the history of the shell collection and biographical background of Julius Brenchley whose large 19th century collection is in the Maidstone Museum, Kent. An important part of this collection came from Pacific islands in 1865 and includes both marine and non-marine molluscs. New taxa were described in Brenchlcy (1873). Type specimens described by Baird from Brenchlcy material have been located in Maidstone and London and a list of these is appended.
