Comparison of syntypes of the gastropod Pleurotoma (Defrancia?) piperata E. A. Smith, 1882, with the holotype of the West American Mangelia (Steironepion) melanosticta Pilsbry & Lowe, 1932, shows them to be conspecific. The type locality for P. piperata, erroneously given as the "Straits of Korea", is corrected to Mazatlán, West Mexico, and the species transferred to the genus Nassarina Dall, 1889, subgenus Steironepion Pilsbry & Lowe, 1932, in the family Columbellidae.
